We all get muscle aches. Sometimes it comes from overexertion such as participating in the Birkebeiner or Silver Skate this weekend, sleeping in a disagreeable position or but it always seems to come with aging.
A solution to reducing this soreness is to have hot soaks in tubs such as hot tubs, whirlpools, etc. Many of us don’t have these in our houses but we can get take a hot bath to help soften up and relax our muscles. To increase the benefit of a hot bath all you have to do is add Epson Salts (magnesium sulphate) to your bath water.
Adding Epsom Salts to your bath water allows the body to absorb the magnesium into your body and to relax muscles. To have a relaxing and sedative bath/soak add two cups of Epsom Salts to your bath water.
Other uses of Epsom Salts are:
Night time face cleaner: mix half a teaspoon of Epsom Salt into your regular facial cleanser, massage into your skin, and rinse with cold water.
Foot soak: soothe skin, removes odours, and soften rough skin. Add ½ cup of Epson Salt to a large pan of warm water. Soak your feet for as long as it feels right. You might want to add more hot water so that the warming effect is maintained. Rinse and dry off your feet. I used to do this when my son and I would return from a tobogganing, skating, winter cycling or skiing adventure and his feet were cold. Having his feet warm and soaking floods through his whole body. It adds to the good time we had out in the cold.
Hand soak: just like feet we use these small muscles and bones throughout the day. Soak them as you would your feet. You will be surprised how soft your hands are after such a soak.
Skin exfoliator: Massage handfuls of dry Epsom Salt crystals over your wet skin starting with your feet and continuing up to your face. To double down on this you can do this as you are soak in the bath. Only add a quarter to half the amount of Epsom Salts you would normally add to your bath water and use the dry crystals to massage your skin while the dissolve in the bath water.
Sprains and bruises: Epsom Slats will help to reduce swelling of sprains and bruises. Soak the damaged area in warm water with a higher concentration of Epsom Salt than you regularly use.
Gardening: Epsom Salts have many benefits in organic gardening. Search the internet for more information such as this site.
Earth’s General Store only carries Epsom Salt in bulk. We encourage people to bring their own containers or bags to refill. Please get your container weighed by a staff person so you don’t get charge for the weight. We also give 5 cents reward when you reuse a container.
The price of our Epsom Salts are $3.75 per kilogram.
We also carry magnesium chloride crystals these are even more effective for those people that require the extra kick (unfortunately we only carry this product in a package form and not in bulk). I have been told our packages of this product is much more reasonable than any other place in Edmonton. Come and compare.
PS – I believe you get the best results the warmer the water. It is best to start off with warm water and then once you feet/body get used to this temperature add more hot water and increase the temperature of the bath water.
